Innistrad: Crimson Vow has been out for a couple of weeks. We have seen which cards could be the best for Standard and which are the best archetypes to draft.
This week we’re back to talking about Standard, and I’m going to give you my personal guide to Mono White—a strong deck that gave me very good results.
We’ll take a closer look at the decklist and siding in and out against the format’s strongest decks!

The decklist is linear, as almost all cards are 4x. One-mana drops are fundamental for this deck and put you in a good position by having an aggressive start, despite the deck not being an aggro like all the others, which is evident by the many three-mana drops. Usher of the Fallen is able to create a board alone, great for a restart, and to put pressure.
However, the card that surprised me a lot is Stonebinder’s Familiar. I’ve rarely seen this card played thanks to all the spells that remove cards from the game (Skyclave Apparition, Brutal Chatar and Portable Hole), hand (Elite Spellbinder), or graveyard (Sungold Sentinel). It’s able to put a lot of pressure on its own and in some mirror/match against Mono Green to control the board.
Finally, Portable Hole is important right now. It’s essential in mirrors and in the match-up against Mono Green, useful in game one against Izzet Dragons to remove Smoldering Egg, and useful against other decks like Jund/Orzhov to remove low-drops like Magda, Brazen Outlaw or Shambling Ghast. In short, it’s a very good card that has many uses.
Let’s look at two-mana drops. The biggest addition the deck has received is Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. This card is essential in a meta full of spells. It is helpful against UR in all its forms and slows down your opponent. Mono Green is also fine, especially on the play because it slows down your opponent’s spells and it’s a perfect blocker in combination with Luminarch Aspirant. Luminarch is the two-drop you always want. It’s a strong card that turns any card into a threat. This is important in the mirror because having bigger creatures than your opponent means winning the game.
Sungold Sentinel is another nice surprise. A two-mana 3/2 that works well with Familiar, removes cards from the graveyard, which is important against Lier-decks, and becomes unblockable in the late game due to its coven ability. In short, it’s a two-drop that is always played with pleasure.
We close the two-mana drops with Intrepid Adversary, which is a versatile card capable of putting pressure as a 3/1 lifelink and being a useful card in late game thanks to being able to make creatures bigger, which is the key to dominate in mirror matches.
Three-mana drops close out the decklist. Endless words have been spent on Skyclave Apparition since the days of Zendikar Rising. It’s a strong card that is also played in Modern and needs no introduction.
Brutal Chatar is a novelty and is reminiscent of Fiend Hunter, but I think it can be stronger at times. It’s a great blocker, especially in mirror, since it can be flipped into a 3/3 First Strike if no spells are played. This is a decisive card, as if well protected, it can be used to exile more than one creature.
Elite Spellbinder is another important card for match-ups against control and midrange decks. It makes a difference by slowing down your opponent’s Meathook Massacre or Lolth, Spider Queen.
Adeline comes closest to Hero of Bladehold—a card that has been my favorite for a long time. It’s weaker but still very strong in this meta. At 1/4 vigilance, it’s a nice blocker, makes the board, and puts pressure, which is everything the deck wants to do.
SIDEBOARD GUIDE
The game, like any aggro mirror, relies heavily on board control and optimal management of cards like Brutal Cathar and Skyclave Apparition. You should always try to use your Apparitions, the match-up’s most important spell, on your opponent’s Brutal Cathar.
Post-side Maul of the Skyclaves makes the difference and Reidane is annoying on the play for your opponent. Adeline is a strong card because it puts a lot of pressure and it’s a good blocker.
This match-up is good and improves post side.
Brutal Cathar and Skyclave Apparition are important cards in this match-up, and hopefully your opponent sees as little Blizzard Brawl as possible.
Post-side more removals like Portable Hole are added, which is great against Werewolf Pack Leader and Ranger Class/Esika’s Chariot and Wrenn tokens. Fourth Apparition is also useful.
Valorous Stance is versatile by acting as a defense for fights and removal for bigger creatures like Troll and Mammoth.
Maul can be decisive in turning the game to your favor. Your opponent won’t have many solutions to flying creatures other than their usual fight-spell package. It becomes important here to use Valorous Stance to protect the creature that will bring victory.
A lot depends on your opponent’s start and their number of removals. There are times when this match-up will seem favorable to you and times when it will be bad.
Pre-side your opponent is unlikely to play mass removals, so you can play anything and put as much pressure on them as possible.
Post-side you add cards like Paladin Class that slow your opponent down and force them to play things on their turn.
Reidane has the same function of slowing down your opponent’s spells, while Adeline is useful to play around Cinderclasm and can make the board alone.
Valorous Stance is useful and defends your creatures while killing your opponent’s dragons.
Mono White seemed really strong to me. It deserves to be at the top of the ladder and to be the most played deck.
In addition to being competitive, it’s also fun and interactive. As mentioned before, it’s not the typical aggro that many don’t like. I recommend everyone give it a chance, and you’ll probably be happy playing this deck.
