Today I propose a small guide on one of the many variants of Jeskai that is currently being played: Jeskai Combo!

 

 

                   

 

The combo targets a Goldspan Dragon with a Show of Confidence after playing as many instants and sorceries as possible so that every copy of this instant that targets the Dragon produces a treasure.

 

 

                   

 

Having a high amount of mana, Lier reuses all spells from the graveyard to win the game, attacks with the Dragon with many counters on it (usually protected by Sejiri Shelter and therefore unblockable), or uses Kazuul’s Fury and sacrifices creatures to finish your opponent.

 

Let’s look at the decklist and some side in and out to play against the current most played decks!

 

 

JESKAI COMBO – DECKLIST

 

 

 

The main goal of this deck is to stabilize the board and try to make as much treasure as possible before playing Goldspan Dragon.

 

 

Prismari Command is one of the strongest cards in this deck. Its versatility is always strong, but it’s even stronger in this deck. Besides being an early game removal, making a treasure on turn three is important, as well as making card quality by looking for the required combo pieces.

 

 

                    

 

Excluding the Dragon, the strongest card in the deck is Unexpected Windfall, an amazing card that makes two treasures and draws two cards.

 

The advantage it can give when played with Galvanic Iteration is hard to manage for your opponent.

 

 

 

We have spoken many times about Expressive Iteration on the card’s strength and how it has changed the meta of both Standard and Modern.

 

 

 

This deck also has another spell, Alchemist’s Gambit, that is played for the first time. It seems perfect for this deck. At only three mana, it provides an extra turn that is often decisive where we can win. If the game goes long, the cleave cost ensures you don’t lose after that turn.

 

 

                                        

 

Spikefield Hazard and Fading Hope, along with Prismari Command, allow you to get control of the board in the early turns.

 

 

 

Finally, let’s close by talking about the Goldspan Dragon, which is the base of this deck because of its ability to create treasures when it’s targeted and its ability to make treasures give two mana instead of one. 

 

 

 

Lier, Disciple of the Drowned has a dual function to protect your combo. First, it makes all your spells uncounterable. Second, and most importantly, you can play spells from your graveyard after having obtained a lot of mana thanks to all your synergies and, in most of the cases, to win the game.

The goal is to include as many removals as possible by removing cards that are fairly useless or that, like Jwari Disruption, have little use in this match-up. 

 

The match-up is pretty good if your opponent’s starts aren’t so fast that you can’t contain them in the early turns.

 

You win the game because you have much more advantage and your opponent only has two Valorous Stance, usually in sideboard, to interfere with your combo.

 

 

 

 

 

                                        

 

 

                                        

 

 

                                       

 

 

 

                                             

 

 

                                        

 

 

                                        

 

The mirror will often be a game that will go on for a long time.

 

It’s essential not to get your Unexpected Windfall countered because the card’s advantage is important.

 

In conclusion, you have to accumulate as many resources as possible and try to win when you’re covered enough by the counter, or you have to wait for the opponent to tap out trying to solve a Lier or Dragon to win the game.

 

Post-side the game becomes more complex and solving a Smoldering Egg turn two could help a lot.

 

A Test of Talent done on the Windfall can often mean winning the game, though you have to be patient and wait.

 

 

 

 

 

                                         

 

 

                                        

 

 

                                        

 

 

 

                                             

 

 

                                        

 

 

                                        

 

 

The match-up is bad and this justifies the many side cards.

 

Your opponent will often be too fast and the lack of mass removal will hurt, and they also have access to cards like Thalia and Reidane that slow you down. Post-side the situation improves. You insert the helpful Cinderclasm and many other useful spot removals.

 

Smoldering Egg finally provides you with both a good blocker and an alternative closure for the late game.

 

 

Jeskai Combo is very strong and a lot of fun. I recommend you try it if you like to play combo decks.
It will take a couple of games to better understand the various interactions, but once you understand the deck, it will look fantastic.
