Last week we saw the current state of Modern, the most varied and fun format, and how Modern Horizons 2 has completely upset the balance. 

 

                   

 

We’ll now look at a deck that reached its peak with the arrival of Karn, the Great Creator before the ban of Mycosynth Lattice. It’s a combo so strong that Wizards stopped it by banning the artifact that, together with this planeswalker, blocked virtually any opposing play. 

 

Today, however, with some changes and the right meta call, this deck can still easily claim a place in the current meta. Let’s talk about Tron and its UG version.

 

UG TRON – DECKLIST

 

 

PLANESWALKERS

 

Karn, the Great Creator is one of the strongest cards ever printed for this deck. Its versatility makes it the deck’s most important card. The side is mostly 1x just for Karn. There are cards for any eventuality. 

 

                                   

 

Ensnaring Bridge is good against any deck that wants to attack with creatures, which is almost any deck at the top of the current metagame. Wurmcoil Engine is strong against Mono Red and useful to block the opponent’s race. Trinisphere is a nightmare for Izzet Regent since it plays only cheap spells and they usually can’t afford to pay three mana for each of those spells. Sundering Titan is useful against 4c Control. 

 

                   

 

The synergy with Liquimetal Coating could turn the match-up against slower decks. First, you’ll turn one of your opponent’s lands into an artifact, Then, through the +1 of Karn, it becomes a 0/0 creature that dies immediately. Destroying an opponent’s land per turn is not a manageable situation.

 

 

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is good to play when you have eight mana. It works as a mass removal with the -X ability, clocks your opponent thanks to the three damage it can do every turn, and it’s basically a finisher through the -10 that draws seven cards, gains seven lives, and puts seven permanents into play, making it hard to lose.

 

 

It’s worth noting the absence of Karn Liberated, which seems too slow for the meta. The seven-mana cost makes it an unplayable removal spell. It will return when mid-range strategies become competitive again, but this is not the time.

 

CREATURES

 

 

Walking Ballista is suitable and versatile for many situations and is essential for this deck. It’s useful in early turns as a cheap removal. There will be many times to play it at two mana to shoot one damage to a creature. It’s fundamental in late game when you have a lot of mana to win thanks to its ability to receive counters. It’s good in mid-game to keep the board.

 

 

Hydroid Krasis is the first novelty we see in this deck. Those who have forgotten the dominance of this card in Standard may have not played it enough. It prevents any deck from running out of cards in your hand, provides a blocker, and gains life. The abundance of available mana will often make this card optimal and one of the reasons to play Green.

 

 

Another meta call slot is Sundering Titan. More decks now have four colors, so it is the right time to play this card, which will always break an opponent’s land to slow them down.

 

 

Emrakul, the Promised End, is one of the most beautiful cards I’ve ever played. In this deck, its mana cost won’t be discounted much, but the ability to control your opponent’s turn is too strong an ability. On the board you can put a 13/13 creature with flying, trample, and protection from instants, which is not easy to take away. It’s the deck’s MVP.

 

SPELLS

 

 

There are eight counterspells in the deck. Condescend is harmonious with the deck because it has so much mana, its X cost is invaluable late in the game, and in the first turns it counters a threat and makes a scry, allowing us to look for either the missing third Tron land or a threat to put on the board. 

 

 

Remand is good to play in Blue decks that want to gain time for a strong play in the following turn. A turn could be instrumental by closing the throne and putting a threat on the board. This card is strong against Living End, as it provides a dead card in hand and stops the combo, Force of Negation permitting.

 

 

Repeal is the wild card, useful against aggro to gain time and could be effective against Blood Moon. In rare cases, it can bounce your own Chalice to change its number of counters and bounce Krasis to be replayed. It does a bit of everything so having one is recommended.

 

 

There is little to say about Sylvan Scrying, a land finder that will mostly be used to look for the missing piece of tron but can also look for hits, such as Academy Ruins or Blast Zone.

 

ARTIFACTS

 

                   

 

There is little to say about the Expedition Map, including Talisman of Curiosity, with the exception that it gives us colored mana when needed.

 

                   

 

Mindslaver is useful and controls the opponent’s turn and goes into recursion with Academy Ruins. In fact, this combo lets you play all your opponent’s turns to win the game.

 

 

Chalice of the Void is great to have in your opening hand, but you never want to draw it late in the game. It’s strong in this meta. With one mana, it practically kills Hammer Time and Izzet Regent, as they won’t be able to play the majority of their spells. With zero mana against Crashing Footfalls or Living End, it’ll block spells they want to cascade into, blocking their synergy. It’s a strong and useful card, which gives us that famous time we were talking about at the beginning.

 

KARN’S SILVER BULLETS

 

The sideboard is almost all 1x, so let’s look at the cards’ purposes and who Karn needs to go after.

 

 

This card is good to tutor against many decks as it works as a versatile mass removal. It’s great against Hammer Time where you’d often cast them for one (Colossus Hammer, Sigrada’s Aid), which are the deck’s worst threat. However, consider casting it for zero to get rid of attackers like Memnite and Ornithopter. Engineered Explosives for one is good against Izzet and to keep Ragavan and Dragon’s Rage Channeler under control.

 

 

This is a mini-combo that uses the +1 of Karn, the Great Creator to destroy an opponent’s land each turn. The land is turned into an artifact and becomes a creature with power and toughness equal to its mana cost (which is 0 in lands), so a good 0/0 that will die immediately.

 

 

This card is capable of winning games by itself and preventing opponent attacks, especially the first attacks where the opponent will hardly find answers in the deck. Izzet, Living End is strong against Hammer, but you have to be careful not to die from an Ornithopter that is equipped at instant speed thanks to Sigarda’s Aid.

 

 

This card slows down Izzet since it only plays one-mana spells. It is good against decks like Crashing Footfalls or Living End because they can’t play their zero-mana cards. Its competitiveness against Hammer Time depends on the board. It could be late and may be better to take Bridge.

 

 

This card is good for going after aggro or trying to stall the board. Brazen Borrower, which is becoming more played in the format, lessens the card’s effect, but it still does well against decks that don’t play Brazen Borrower.

 

                   

 

The sideboard features obvious cards like Dismember that go against decks with problematic creatures, and Relic of Progenitus, which does a great job against Izzet, Living End and any deck that has synergies with the graveyard.

 

The deck is fun and strong. I recommend to those still in love with Urza lands to give it a chance, which unlike the Mono Green version, will be more interactive and complicated to play.
