Modern Horizons 2 has totally changed the format by making it varied and enjoyable to play. We analyzed the return of Merfolk in the meta and looked at the emerging deck Orzhov Stoneblade. This week we talk about Enchantress, an amazing deck that is on its way to entering tier one of the format.

 

ENCHANTRESS – DECKLIST

 

 

ONE-MANA DROP

 

                   

 

One-mana drops are one of the most important parts of this deck. Abundant Growth and Utopia Sprawl speed up plays. It’s essential to have at least one of these cards in your starting hand so you’re not too slow or have to deal with having marginal hands. 

 

 

On Thin Ice is the only removal, so managing it is your only worry.

 

These are essential cards because enchantments often trigger card draw, which maintains your resource supply. The high-draw deck gives you a full hand and is an advantage in a format where decks tend to quickly deplete resources.

 

TWO-MANA DROP 

 

Almost every two-mana drop in this Enchantress deck comes from Modern Horizons 2, and they consist of the strongest cards in the deck.

 

 

Sythis, Harvest’s Hand gives the deck fuel by increasing card draw and giving you a life point with every draw, which accumulates into something bigger.

 

                   

 

Sterling Grove is another bomb printed specifically for this deck. It gives shroud to other enchantments and helps you find something useful in the deck. This is an upgrade to Greater Auramancy, which functions similarly but doesn’t give you useful things when you need them.

 

 

Sanctum Weaver is the latest two-mana addition from MH2. It helps your turns become multi-functional when you combine a nice board with your draw engines.

 

 

Finally, we close with Destiny Spinner — an important, dual-function card. It makes enchantments uncounterable, which is valuable in certain match-ups, and gives you an alternative closure by turning lands into creatures.

 

THREE-MANA DROP 

 

 

Let’s start with a card known to any player of this format: Blood Moon. It is one of the most-played cards because it can be a significant challenge for some decks to overcome. It fits well in this deck because you can protect it for a long time and it’s not burdensome. It will be decisive in match-ups like Amulet Titan.

 

 

Enchantress’s Presence makes its comeback after Onslaught set and keeps the deck’s resources plentiful.

 

 

We close with my favorite card in this deck — Solitary Confinement. It’s an autowin in some match-ups, and you should be able to keep the card due to the deck’s high card draw. Only decks that play Brazen Borrower will have an effective answer in the first game. This enchantment will be one of the main reasons this deck becomes competitive.

 

SIGIL OF THE EMPTY THRONE 

 

 

The strongest closure for this Enchantress deck lets you put into play a flying 4/4 every time you cast an enchantment. You can afford to play only one because Sterling Grove will allow you to take it at the right time.

 

ENCHANTRESS – SIDEBOARDING

 

 

                                       

 

                                       

 

This is a good match-up where the first game is a nightmare for your opponent on account of Blood Moon, Solitary Confinement and being behind in resources. You have to be unlucky to lose.

 

The situation could get worse post-side, especially if your opponent plays Emrakul, which is low interaction, so you have to be faster than your opponent to develop a board resolving your threats.

 

 

                                       

 

                                       

 

You need time in this match-up, which winds up being overall good. It will be essential to keep hands with Sterling Grove and Greater Auramancy to protect your creatures and gain time to develop the board. Solitary Confinement will be an autowin because your opponent will not be able to remove it from the board.

 

Post-side you can remove the Blood Moon and a Destiny Spinner to put 4 Nyx-Fleece Ram, which provide both an excellent blocker and the time this match-up requires by giving you a life point per turn.

 

 

                                       

                                       

 

                                       

                                       

 

Without a doubt, this is the worst match-up. There are too many discards and troublesome cards combined with pressure from Stoneforge Mystic and Kaldra Compleat. Skyclave Apparition is also troublesome because it takes away almost everything.

 

You can try to fix the situation with 4 Leyline post-side, but it’s unlikely to change things much, and the match-up remains terrible.

 

 

                                       

 

                                       

 

This match-up is unfavorable, and there is little interaction. You’re at a disadvantage against archetypes that play 4 Brazen Borrower. 

 

Force of Negation is also a hurdle, and survival at turn three is not guaranteed. Your hope to win is to complete the difficult task of quickly developing a good board, giving shroud to your enchantments, and solving a Solitary Confinement.

 

You can put 3 Rest in Peace post-side to gain time because your opponent will be forced to go through Foundation Breaker to win. Regardless, it’s still a bad situation and match-up.

 

I would recommend this deck for something different, fun and competitive. It’s well-positioned in the current meta and is satisfying to play.
